From the public record
The CIA ruled out its own Mach 3 aircraft. The object remained unidentified.
A Navy pilot saw it in full moonlight. USS Gyatt held it on radar for 21 minutes. Then the original radar film was sent to the CIA.
The object was roughly fighter-sized, with no navigation lights or visible contrail. When it accelerated, the pilot reported a brilliant light or cone-shaped fire behind it.
The CIA’s OXCART office checked America’s secret YF-12A and A-12—and ruled them out. The object was never conclusively identified.
